If Theresa May wasn't a woman, she would have been put out of her political misery months ago when she fucked up the election and reduced her party's majority to a wafer-thin one that made her dependent on the votes of the small Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland.
But although she hung on to power, the knives are now being sharpened for her. Before too long the Conservative Party could find itself holding another leadership election.
The mood of the party's grass roots suggests that any vote involving rank-and-file members would push the party to the right.
A recent poll on the Conservative web site ConHome revealed some of this sentiment when it placed Jacob Rees-Mogg in a commanding lead, with 23% of the vote in a packed field. This was well ahead of David Davis on 15%, Dominic Raab on 8%, and Boris Johnson on 7%, etc. In other words "Moggzilla" has a "monster" lead.

Most top Tory politicians are much more left-wing than their base. Rees-Mogg by contrast leans heavily to the right. In the past he has been described as a reactionary, traditionalist, right-wing populist, socially conservative High Tory.
But it is not just Rees-Mogg's political positions that endear him to Conservative voters. It is also his image as an old school upper-class politician, with dapper three-piece suits, strong patriarchal tendencies, and a posh accent. It is this "embodiment of the past" that has made him a lightning rod for the growing dissatisfaction in the Conservative Party for Leftists like Theresa May.
