UEFA Referee Categories 2017: Makkelie and Zwayer promoted to Elite

The UEFA Referees Committee approved the referee categories for the first half of the season 2017-2018. The most significant changes occurred on the men’s and futsal lists. Makkelie (NED) and Zwayer (GER, photo) are the newest additions to the men’s Elite group, while Moen (NOR) and Nijhuis (NED) were demoted to the Second Category. Clattenburg (ENG) is no longer on the Elite list since he decided to leave UEFA for Saudi Arabia. On the futsal list, Malfer (ITA), who had important FIFA and UEFA appointments within the last two years, was surprisingly demoted from Elite to First Category.
